New names for new technology

  • DEUTZ presents its new range of products for Tier 4 interim under new engine designations at bauma 2010
  • New, further developed engines with a broad performance range from 25 to 520 kW
  • Unveiling of the new TCD 2.9 L4 and TCD 3.6 L4 engines

DEUTZ will be presenting a comprehensive range of products representing a new generation of technology to meet the future EU emissions standard IIIB/US EPA Tier 4 interim at bauma 2010, the world's biggest specialist trade fair for construction and mining equipment. The new engines cover a broad performance range from 25 – 520 kW, and combine increased power density with high economic efficiency and proven DEUTZ quality.

To clarify this technological advance, all engines from the next emission standard will bear new product designations. The succinct, self-explanatory engine designation will contain all
of the important product information for the customer: the first three letters will provide specific information such as turbocharger, intercooling and fuel type. This will be followed by engine displacement information in litres and the arrangement and number of cylinders. Engines that are already in production for current and previous exhaust gas standards will retain their existing designations.

DEUTZ will be exhibiting the brand new TCD 2.9 L4 at bauma 2010 for the first time, which
was previously announced under the current project designation TCD 20XX. Available in both
normally aspirated and turbocharged versions (with or without a charge air intercooler) and
equipped with cooled external exhaust gas recirculation and common rail high-pressure injection
with 1,600 bar, the ultracompact 4-cylinder 2.9 litre-series in-line engine covers a performance
range from 25 to 56 kW. The engine achieves its maximum torque of 300 Nm at 1,600 rpm. The compact engine, which was developed especially for very short and tight installations, offers high specific performance and torque while at the same time providing very refined running. There is a full range of customer-specific options, including efficient lateral auxiliary drives and mass balancing shafts. A modular exhaust gas after-treatment system is tailored to the requirements of industrial machinery in respect of its compact design and cost efficiency: the maintenance-free, cost-effective diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC) and particle oxidation catalytic converter (DOC + POC) cater for most applications, with a closed DPF option (diesel particle filter) also available. Series production will begin by mid 2012.

DEUTZ covers the 50 to 85 kW performance range with another newly developed engine, the

TCD 3.6 L4, which achieves a maximum torque of 400 Nm at a speed of 1,400 – 1,600 rpm. The water-cooled, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, with or without a charge air intercooler and cooled external exhaust gas recirculation is equipped with a common rail system with 1,600 bar, while boasting a low power to weight ratio and high power density. Long service intervals also ensure low maintenance costs. Like all DEUTZ engines, the TCD 3.6 L4 has very good cold-start properties for use in extreme climatic conditions. A particle oxidation catalytic converter (DOC + POC) is available for exhaust gas after-treatment, as well as a DPF (diesel particle filtered) option.

With the advent of the new exhaust gas standard, the two newly developed engines TCD 2.9 L4 and TCD 3.6 L4 will establish links with the legendary DEUTZ 2011-series which will remain in production for the current emission standard. "DEUTZ stands for innovation and best-in-class technology. Our latest developments combine maximum customer benefit with minimum operating costs. It means that we will establish and build on our position as the leader in technology", says Gino Mario Biondi, DEUTZ Managing Director of Development and Production.

In the medium performance range, DEUTZ has subjected the proven 2012-series in-line engines
to extensive further development for the next exhaust gas emissions standard. In the 70 to 115 kW performance range, DEUTZ is able to offer its customers the water-cooled TCD 4.1 L4 engine which delivers a maximum torque of 610 Nm at a speed of 1,400 to 1,600 rpm. The turbocharged, intercooled 4-cylinder in-line engine is equipped with a 1,600 bar DEUTZ common rail system (DCR®) and cooled external exhaust gas recirculation. The robust design boasts a high power density, outstanding reliability and long service intervals. A range of customised options, including efficient lateral auxiliary drives and mass balancing shafts, is available for the 4-cylinder engine. The modular exhaust gas after-treatment system provides a closed diesel particle filter (DPF), the regeneration of which is supported by an aircore choke.

In the 120 to 180 kW performance range, DEUTZ has the water-cooled TCD 6.1 L6 which achieves a maximum torque of 1,000 Nm at a speed of 1,400 to 1,600 rpm. The robust 6-cylinder in-line engine with turbocharger and intercooler, cooled external exhaust gas recirculation and electronically controlled DEUTZ common rail system (DCR®) high-pressure injection with 1,600 bar up to 160 kW or 2,000 bar for top-of-the-range performance boasts out standing economic efficiency, a long engine service life and long service intervals. A closed diesel particle filter (DPF) with regeneration through an air-core choke for <130 kW or with diesel burner regeneration for >130 kW enables the TCD 6.1 L6 to fulfil the requirements of the new exhaust gas standards.

The water-cooled 6-cylinder TCD 7.8 L6 engine, with a performance of 160 to 250 kW, is the most powerful engine in the medium performance class. At a speed of 1,400 to 1,600 rpm it achieves a maximum torque of 1,400 Nm. Equipped with a turbocharger with a charge air intercooler, cooled external exhaust gas recirculation, wet cylinder liners and DEUTZ common rail (DCR®) high-pressure injection with 2,000 bar, the engine is designed for high loading. The high-performance engine has excellent power density and outstanding reliability with long service intervals. The TCD 7.8 uses an exhaust gas after-treatment system tailored to industrial machinery with high loading requirements. A closed diesel particle filter (DPF) with active diesel burner regeneration guarantees maximum machine availability under all conditions.

The TCD 12.0 V6 covers the 240 to 390 kW performance range. The V-configuration watercooled engine is turbocharged and intercooled, and is equipped with wet cylinder liners and common rail high-pressure injection with an injection pressure of 2,000 bar. The compact Vdesign enables very low installed dimensions. Designed for high loading, the TCD 12.0 boasts outstanding robustness and long service intervals. With its proven high-performance SCR technology, the TCD 12.0 is tailored to large industrial machinery with high loading requirements where fuel consumption has top priority.

The engine range is completed by the high-performance TCD 16.0 V8 V-engine. The watercooled
8-cylinder engine, which produces 350 to 520 kW, rounds off the DEUTZ range of products for the IIIB / Tier 4 interim emissions standard. Equipped with a turbocharger, charge air intercooler and wet cylinder liners, the TCD 16.0 generates a maximum torque of 2,890 Nm at a speed of 1,400 rpm, and boasts optimal equipment performance. Environmentally harmful emissions are reduced courtesy of the modern electronic common rail injection system with 2,000 bar in combination with an SCR exhaust gas after-treatment system. The compact design of the V-engine affords the customer a substantial saving in terms of installation space, which in turn reduces the installation costs.

Marked improvements in engine performance were achieved for all of the engine types referred to. In particular, the response times of engines undergoing dynamic load changes were reduced by up to 50 per cent, as evidenced by the significantly higher productivity of construction equipment. All DEUTZ engines also excel in terms of cost effectiveness. This is achieved through simple cost-effective installations, a long engine service life and long service intervals, as well as low fuel and oil consumption. Acoustically optimised components also ensure that costly additional insulation is virtually unnecessary for damping purposes.

With the new engines conforming to the IIIB / Tier 4 interim exhaust gas standard, equipment with the same or even improved equipment performance - and, generally speaking, significantly lower fuel consumption - can be equipped with smaller engines than has been the norm. The key to this success lies in the combination of new technologies such as improved common rail fuel injection, optimised turbocharging and basic engine components that are designed to far higher power densities. The TCD 3.6 and TCD 6.1, in particular, have exhibited significant increases in performance compared with the IIIA / Tier 3-standard predecessor. The TCD 3.6 will find its main sales market in the future in the 75 to 85 kW performance range, where previously only 4 to 4.5-litre engines were used. The same applies to the TCD 6.1 which, at 180 kW, will enter a performance range previously reserved for 7-litre engines.

The solutions offered by DEUTZ to comply with the new EU-Nonroad 2004/26/EU III B and US EPA Tier 4 interim exhaust gas standards are as versatile as the proven DEUTZ modular system. With the customer-oriented components system for optional accessories, all new engines can be optimally adapted to various application segments. This modular principle is also the philosophy behind the DEUTZ DVERT® system.

All new DEUTZ engines meeting the EU 97/68 IIIB / Tier 4 interim standard have been prepared, through the modular DVERT® platform, for the forthcoming exhaust gas standards EU IV and US EPA Tier 4. The modular structure of the DVERT® system of technology modules, which are compatible with the individual engine configurations, means that integrated system solutions drawn from engine and exhaust gas technologies are achieved. The various DVERT® elements, external technologies for exhaust gas after-treatment such as oxidation catalytic converters, particle filters of open and closed design, burners for regeneration and systems for NOx reduction agent injection (SCR) can, in various combinations, achieve the desired result in respect of engine performance, compliance with emissions limits and cost and installation optimisations. The solutions are designed so that they can be upgraded in future to meet even lower emissions limits without the need for major additional modifications. The advantages to the customer are evident. Greater performance and dynamics mean improved engine performance, which in turn means less consumption and lower emissions. Here DEUTZ is a consistent partner for customers in terms of their choice and design of system, as well as for integration into equipment. Flexible installation options also make DVERT® a system module for all engine series, irrespective of the engine configuration. DVERT® represents the technological system module for the new generation of engines. DEUTZ is ideally placed to meet future challenges – whatever the customer requirements.

A special highlight awaits visitors to the DEUTZ stand at the trade fair on 19 April, 2010: the TCD 2.9 L4 will be unveiled to the public for the first time at the DEUTZ AG stand at 10 a.m.
