High-performance engine for super yachts

DEUTZ introduces new yacht engine

DEUTZ AG, of Cologne, will be showcasing its new series of diesel engines for marine application, including the new 2016 series, at this year's "Salone Nautico" in Genoa.

With the new 2016 diesel engine series especially developed for application in large yachts, high-speed official vessels and ferries, DEUTZ AG is aiming to consolidate its position in this market segment. The supercharged and intercooled engines are available as 12 and 16-cylinder variants. With 132 mm bore and 160 mm stroke, they have a displacement of almost 2.2 litres per cylinder. With a displacement of 26.3 l the 12-cylinder engine is capable of developing an output of 1,125 kW, and with 35.04 l the 16-cylinder engine is capable of producing up to 1,500 kW at 2.300 rpm. At this setting the mean pressure is of the order of 22.3 bar.

A number of features have been integrated in the development of this new yacht engine: the 2016 includes the single-pipe PEARL exhaust system (Pulse Energy Advanced Recovery Line), developed in-house by DEUTZ. The application of a Holset HX82 turbocharger with waste-gate accompanies the PEARL system. A Behr aluminium high-performance intercooler with a larger cooling surface but much lower in weight, also helps increase output and improve performance.

The engine concept has been largely adopted from the 616 series. However, a reinforced crankshaft made of a different material and an improved camshaft solution were needed in view of the higher output. The crankshaft is mounted in sputter bearings. A high-efficiency lube oil pump ensures an improved supply of lube oil, necessary in view of the greater output. The electronic governor is a standard solution provided by GAC, Governor of America Corporation, in conjunction with 'MKS', the engine monitoring system developed by DEUTZ. A bigger alternator, 140 Ah / 24V, meets the need for greater power take-off requirements in modern yachts.

The 2016 engine family has already been installed in many yachts all over the world: for instance, at the beginning of 2003 "Take Time", a 72-foot sport fishing vessel registered in Boca Raton, Florida, was fitted with two 16-cylinder 2016 engines, each developing 1,500 kW at 2,300 rpm.

Also in Florida, another sport fishing vessel, the 72-foot long "Byte Me", was fitted with two 16-cylinder 2016 engines, each of them also delivering 1,500 kW at 2,300 rpm.

On this side of the Atlantic the "Adriatic Princess" registered in Cesenatico, in Italy, has been equipped with two 16-cylinder engines of the new 2016 series.

In October Another yacht was delivered: built in Lavagna, Italy, at the renowned Costruzione Navali Tigullio Castagnola shipyard, the yacht AKIOS has been fitted out with two 16-cylinder engines each capable of developing 1,360 kW at 2,300 rpm.

DEUTZ has carried out a series of highly demanding tests under varying load conditions, designed to probe the engine's dependability.
